Greenhouse Gardening

You may find it more interesting to sell directly from your greenhouse to customers who come to you. In this case, you will not have to confine yourself to one or two types of plants, but can offer a wide selection unless, of course, you decide to build a reputation as a specialist. You will not be under the pressure of delivery dates since your entire stock, whatever it may be at any given time, will be available to any and all customers. This type of operation sometimes proves to be the most satisfactory, as it allows an opportunity for income without the pressures connected with a commercial endeavor.

If you live in a rural community, you may find a ready market for annual and perennial seedlings, tomato and various other vegetable plants for spring gardens. Those who specialize in carnations, camellias, or orchids might find corsages to be profitable, especially around prom and graduation time. Corsage preparation is simple and inexpensive: some florist's tape, fine wire, tiny plastic tubes equipped with sponges, and a few simple twists of the wrist and you will have attractive items to sell. With a little practice, you will soon turn out professional-looking corsages, and word-of-mouth advertising will bring you all the business you can handle.

Some gardeners eliminate the tediousness and tying-up of space required to sow seeds and transplant seedlings by purchasing established plant material in flats or in 2-inch pots and growing it on to saleable size. Mature stock can then be marketed locally or by mail and your business activity may be more easily controlled.
