Fragrant blooms appear in spring and early summer from these ten-der bulbs that are dormant in summer. Full sun and fertile, porous soil are needed. Pot in early fall, keeping upper half of bulb above the soil; repotting will be needed only once in several years.
Water freely and fertilize regularly from fall through spring; withhold water during summer dormancy. When foliage has ripened completely, store pots dry under a bench until the next season. Seed may be sown in spring or offsets may be taken from old bulbs when repotting.
A. fastigiata, white flower petals with green or brown tips; A. major, yellow flowers with a green stripe on each petal; A. minor, white flowers with center stripe of brick-red on each petal.
