Greenhouse Gardening

Purchase one or two small greenhouse acacias from your local garden supplier, since cuttings usually take two years to reach satisfactory size. Acacias like a cool temperature and should be kept moist. Grow in sandy soil mixed with about one-third leafmold; give plenty of sunlight all year and free circulation of air. During March and April the misty green foliage forms a perfect background for drooping clusters of tiny yellow flowers. Allow plants to flower naturally; forcing results in bud-drop. After flowering, plants should be cut back and set out in the garden. Water frequently. In September, repot and return to the greenhouse for winter flowering. Pinch to induce branching and to inhibit excessive growth. Most acacias need really cool nights (about 40 F) during winter. Recommended: A. decurrens dealhata, A. Bailey-ana, A. longifolia floribunda. Albizzia lophantha, formerly known as Acacia lophantha, has tassel-like spikes of brilliant yellow flowers and takes the same culture recommended for acacias.
