Greenhouse Gardening

Flowers in winter are one of the great joys of a garden under glass. When nature goes to sleep outdoors and the greenhouse wakes to vivid life, our every effort is rewarded. Among the plants that bloom and I value a number of others just for foliage are many of very easy culture. Here are some of my favorites that thrive in a cool greenhouse (about 45 to 50 F at night) and do well for me at 52 F, which seems to be the constant night temperature in my greenhouse. Slight variations seem to have little effect on these amenable plants, but even so, I try to place them in areas where there is little fluctuation from the 52 F setting.

Many other plants can be grown under the same conditions, as the list (Plants for cool greenhouses) in Part IV shows, but I suggest the following to you because they mature and bloom fairly quickly. (Others that I enjoy take longer, and you might find the waiting tedious, especially your first year when you are eager to fill your greenhouse with color and fragrance.) You will find the cultural instructions for each of the following plants in the alphabetical list of plants in Part III of this book.
