Greenhouse Gardening

The plants in your greenhouse will probably be grown in one or more of these: benches, pots, or suspended containers such as baskets. There are a few exceptions you may want to fasten an epiphytic plant to a piece of tree fern or bark, and perhaps you will put some climbing plants, shrubs, or plant collections directly in ground beds in the greenhouse. But until you are experienced and have become acquainted with the variations of climate in corners and different levels and areas of your greenhouse, you will most likely use some of each of benches, pots, and baskets.

Bench Plants
When you want an abundant, continuous supply of flowers to cut, grow the plants directly in benches filled with soil, in much the same manner as you operate a cutting garden out-of-doors. If you want flowers for cutting throughout the year, you will have to plan and time things so that when one kind has finished flowering, it can be replaced at once with another.

The plants most commonly grown in benches are:
Carnation (Dianthus Caryophyllus)
Chryanthemum
Snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus)
Stock (Mathiola incana)
Sweet-pea (Lathyrus odoratus)

Others that can be grown in benches by the gardener who wants lots of them available for cutting are:
Baby's-breath (Gypsophila elegans)
Bachelor-button (Centaurea cyanus)
Blue-lace-flower (Trachymene caerulea)
Candytuft (Iberis)
China aster (Callistephus chinensis)
Clarkia elegans
Feverfew (Chrysanthemum Parthenium)
Forget-me-not (Myosotis sylvatica)
Larkspur (Delphinium)
Marigold (Tagetes)
Mignonette (Reseda odorata)
Nemesia strumosa
Pansy (Viola tricolor)
Pot-marigold (Calendula officinalis)
Salpiglossis
Transvaal-daisy (Gerheria Jamesonii)
Violet (Viola odorata)
